Umbrellas have been around for a very, very long time. The very first ones were used as shades from the sun rather than as protection from the rain. It was not until Roman times that women began oiling their parasols to make them impervious to rain. It was in the 1700’s that wood and oilcloth parasols became used in European countries, mainly by women to keep the sun off. It was in 1852 that Samuel Fox invented the steel-ribbed umbrella, making them much more convenient to use.
