The first action step is to have the right posture which would allow you for the right follow through for the swing.
If you have any doubts about your stance take a picture with a camera, or ask someone else to take a picture. Compare the correct stance with the picture which shows the way you are standing. If this is not an option for you, look into some lessons, which will allow you to work with someone to truly master your stance.
If for any reason this option is not practical, you could work this out with some one else, so that you could perfect your stance. You need a good set of foundation skills upon you can improve further as you go on. Because it is difficult to assess one self, you could work with a golf instructor for his honest and unbiased views about your stance.
After rectifying your stance, you need to have a look at problems with your grip. Overextending the grip or holding the club the wrong way can result in a poor backhand right from the start. Unless you hold the club properly, you can never master the art of a good back swing. Remember, physically this is not possible.
There is no way possible to have a correct back swing if you do not grip the club appropriately. So the more you try, the more dejected you would feel. Dramatic outcome can be expected if you simply shift the position of your hands by a small fraction.
This is yet another step towards improving your back swing. Usually players make the mistake of backing up and lifting the club at the same moment. This not only destroys movement but creates an off-center hit.
Simple and uncomplicated task, sure you could do this. As soon as you consciously try to pull before lifting the club, your back swing talent would improve.
