SkyCaddie SG5 Review - Is It The Best Golf GPS For Your Money?
Posted at Apr 24th, 2010 in Golf Books
In the past, before GPS technology became widely used, golfers played their games assisted by minimal amounts of technology. GPS devices are rapidly changing the way drivers reach their destinations and how travelers explore. Even though there are many success stories, some people don’t mind GPS devices since they aren’t cheap, usually over $300.
GPS devices are also responsible for changing how people improve their golf games. Some of these devices like the Skycaddie SG5 have exceeded previous boundaries and have made their way into many golfers’ pockets. This particular device has been a huge financial success for its creator. After reading a Skycaddie SG5 review we noticed that many golfers rave about its functionality as well as its ease of use, but some wonder if the SG5 is worth its $350 price tag. We decided to do a review of our own.
The full color display allows certain technologies to work like the IntelliGreen technology which gives the golfer complete control of the green. Certain statistics can be observed including the green depth, front carry, and back yardages. If the IntelliGreen Pro (currently in Beta) is activated, mounds, contours, and major tiers can be displayed as well.
The IntelliGreen technology also works with the QuickVue technology which highlights the safest possible path from the tee all the way to the green. With the clear 2.2″ backlit LCD display, golfers should be able to immediately recognize the shape of the green and the golf hole. This feature also doubles as a progress tracker where more statistics can be retrieved including the distance between the current position and the green.
The Skycaddie SG5 provides much more than just a visual aid to golfers. Other statistics are stored and displayed which can take the place of traditional scorecards. Golfers that take advantage of digital scoring only have to set their preferences and par for a customized handicap setting. After a shot is made, golfers can press a single button and the device will display exactly how far the ball traveled. This proves useful when experimenting with a variety of clubs.
The SG5 is designed to follow the golfer not in terms of just location, but also literally guides the golfer throughout the entire golfing session by recording any statistics that can be reviewed at anytime. Since it relies on the downloaded maps, the Skycaddie should have no problems.
Another feature that is currently undergoing beta testing is the HoleVue technology. This technology strives to be as accurate as possible in going through the whole course instead of depending on satellite imagery. Not only is this new technology adding to the eye candy, but it also add a lot of significant details including any bunkers, green targets, or other hazards.
These technologies are plenty to convince golfers to plan ahead and lower their scores by taking advantage of the attractive interface. In addition to the GPS device, the package includes a travel case, car charger, and an LCD protector. After completing our Skycaddie SG5 review, we believe this package is well worth the price tag.
