If I had a pound for each time I’ve heard a well-meaning golfer say to his friend or golf partner for the day “You lifted your head, that’s why you hit a dreadful golf shot, Keep your head down” I would be very rich without a doubt. This one piece of well-intended advice is a killer for a good golf swing … please do not Keep your head down - KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL.

If you keep your head down then your golf game is gonna go down, down, down until you are tearing your hair out wondering what you have to do to hit this stupid white ball with some consistency. By having your head position down it can lead to problems of tilting for one thing which affects your balance and weight distribution to name but two of the real problems this affliction leads to.

Ok so what should you do I hear you say. It is all so straightforward really and if you are struggling with your golf swing because you are concentrating on keeping your head down, STOP right now.

An important part of your game should be a good posture, which includes your head position. Hold your head up as high as possible when taking up your stance. Obviously make certain you can still see the ball. This will allow you to turn your shoulders correctly as opposed to having your head down, and we know all too well the problem that creates. This new head position is going to let you make a backswing, which allows you to keep your head still.

You will need to practice as much as possible with this new head position as it will feel awkward to begin with. But within a short space of time your golf game will improve along with crisper consistent shotmaking. So Let everyone see the smile on your face and get that head up.

Keeping your head down will hamper your golf game, but getting your head up is going to help you keep your head still which is a key ingredient in a first-class golfer.
